Camping in New Zealand comes well organised and also wild, with nothing but a cool mountain stream to provide sustenance. New Zealand may be full of sheep, but there is still a wondrous amount of space in which to camp.
With so many camping sites, the country’s campers do not lack for choice. With two islands of varied and enticing scenery, it’s hard to know where to start. You might as well start from Auckland, with its fine beaches and harbour vistas. Not so far away are volcanoes, bubbling mud pools and long beaches, miles and miles in length, just waiting for camping addicts. Head to the South Island and you’ll find amazing mountain trails, where carrying your own tent is the only option. The wonders of Milford Sound, Mount Cook, the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers are just a few of many intriguing highlights. Yet even in this pristine but well ordered wilderness, there are places set aside for camping, either wild places or well-serviced modern New Zealand campsites.
With such a small population, it’s likely that you’ll soon meet the locals and there will undoubtedly be many nationalities sharing the showers and kitchens with you. New Zealand was made for relaxing holidays, camping under canvas or in mobile homes.
