There’s nowhere in the world quite like an Italian camping site in high season. This is not just a camping holiday, this is a ritual—a time to participate in the unique Italian ‘take’ on life. The whole family, and yes, we mean the whole multitude of the family, will all be together. No one will be spared. No one seems to stop talking, except during the compulsory lunchtime siesta on all camping sites.
The children will love it away from the big city high-rises, or the noisy horn-blaring street they’ve left behind. The parents will love it—no more grinding nine to five, so off with the shirt and into the string vest. The old grandpa and mama will be sitting in their special camping chairs—he in his oldest string vest and she with her woolly hat and knitting, even though it’s 40°C in the shade below the trees on the camping site.
On an Italian camping site no one gets up early and everyone wears a toweled bathrobe until lunchtime. No one goes to bed early, and everyone has the Chianti to hand. Camping places in Italy are one big showground for people watching and promenading, where the canvas and caravans take a backward spot. In fact an Italian camping site can be full of elegant well-dressed people in their smartest designer camping wear.
On an Italian camping site there’s little time to actually do anything, and why should they, for this is their annual extravaganza—the Italian summer camping holiday! So if you're planning a vacation then a camping holiday in Italy is a thing to try.
