A camping expedition into the heart of Germany is not a regimented affair at all. For a country that makes superbly engineered cars, coaches and trucks, you would expect that its camping places would be run with equal precision. And without fail you would be right, for that famed German efficiency is the equal of their Swiss counterparts.
Germany is a large country, but its motorways allow the free-spirited camper the chance to travel easily from one attraction to another. There are vibrant cities like Berlin, picture-postcard towns like Heidelberg and Koblenz, as well as vast tracts of untamed pine forest and rolling hill country. The Alps are never far from the horizon for the camper in the south, nor are the tranquil waters of its many beautiful lakes.
For those camping fans who flock to the October fest (beer festival), who could believe that a certain Teutonic manner could be so far banished and exchanged for a riotous party attitude? It’s the surprising thing about a trip across Germany—you can never be sure what you may encounter next. Nor, it would seem, can you be sure whom you will meet next in its popular and inviting camping places. There’s no shortage of action on a German camping holiday!
